Candela Rivero

Candela Rivero is the author of Metamorphosis, a poetry collection published in Summer 2020. She is a Creative Writing student born in Buenos Aires, Argentina but currently living in South Florida, United States.

Her poetry touches on love, heartbreak, identity, art, loss, and womanhood. Most of her poetry is inspired by her own journey as a constantly-evolving-being. Other sources of inspiration include art, literature, nature, traveling and people. These sources of inspiration are very present in her metaphor and verses. It is for this reason, that her first poetry collection was titled Metamorphosis. This concept takes a process seen in nature and transforms it into one applicable to the human heart.

Childhood & Books...

As a kid, she always loved reading. She grew up around books, wondering why there was always a book on her parents’ nightstands. It wasn’t until she learned how to read for herself that she understood the magic of words. The first book that she fell in love with was the Twilight saga. Even though she enjoys a good science fiction book every once in a while, she is currently obsessed with historical fiction– her passion for literature merged with her curiosity for history. Her favorite historical fiction books are The Alice Network by Kate Quinn, The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank and The Night Portrait by Laura Morelli. Other genres she enjoys are nonfiction and (of course) poetry.

Led to a Career in Writing

Even though she always loved reading, she never considered pursuing a career in writing until her sophomore year in high school which was also the year she moved to Florida. During her first year in the United States, she took her first Creative Writing class. It was a class that shaped her view on writing and life. While society teaches us to choose the career that guarantees financial stability, she valued passion over wealth. Her decision was strongly influenced by the idea that she needed to choose something that would allow her to wake up happy every day because she gets to do what she loves. Writing is that for her. Writing is healing, remembering, and growing.

She believes reading to be an essential part of writing. We read to write. We read to learn. The first contemporary books that she read were all by R.M Drake. For months, that was the only thing she would read. Later, she incorporated other contemporary writers as well. Now, her favorite poetry books include the sun and her sunflowers by Rupi Kaur, Memories by Lang Leav, Bluets by Maggie Nelson and FLUX by Orion Carloto. Other famous poets she admires include Ada Limon, Louise Glück, and Danez Smith.

She hopes that her poetry will take you through a journey of introspection in which you learn how to grow from brokenness. Sometimes we need to break in order to heal.
